Activities on the Occasion of International Day of the World’s Indigenous People 2017
On August 8, 2017, BEAM Education Foundation participated in the event of International Day of the World’s Indigenous People 2017, organized by The Network of Indigenous Peoples in Thailand [NIPT], the Council of Indigenous Peoples in Thailand [CIPT], and their partners at the Faculty of Education, Chiang Mai University.
The event aims to assist both the government and public to better understand the strengths, issues, identity, and culture of indigenous peoples (IP) throughout the nation. During this period, they have joined in these activities and become better able to recognize and respect IP values and lifestyles. This year, 2017, marks the 10th anniversary of this UN declaration, with a continuing focus on the rights of indigenous people and acceptance of their identity and diverse lifestyles.
About 20 BEAM students, teachers and staff members attended the event and gained knowledge about Indigenous People. The event provided a space for public awareness and understanding of indigenous identity and for the exchange of indigenous technical knowledge in achieving sustainable development. There were approximately 1,000 people from different groups in attendance. BEAM students also participated in a group discussion and gave a presentation on educational rights for indigenous people. The students performed traditional dance as part of the Indigenous Cultural Performances held during the evening session. It was a great opportunity for BEAM students to not only gain exposure and awareness about Indigenous People, but also to make friends with ethnic minority groups from Thailand, Myanmar, and other ASEAN Nations.
