Advanced Language Preparation and Prior Learning Assessment Program (ALPPLA)
Among migrant youth in Chiang Mai, registering with the Thai Education Department is not an option for many since they do not have legal status. At the same time, many migrants do not have enough English or Thai language skills to enter advanced education programs at non-government organizations (such as BEAM’s GED Program).
The Advanced Language Preparation and Prior Learning Assessment (ALPPLA) Program for continuous learning and career development will create a bridge for migrant youth.
Financial barriers prevent many eligible students from continuing their education. Moreover, comprehensive education (culturally, academically relevant, and one promoting continuous learning) is much needed. With the lack of or no qualifications, it is not easy for migrant students to receive a university education and the required knowledge needed to build academic skills and to explore a subject area of interest.
Access to higher education for undocumented migrant youth is especially important. They are significantly prohibited access to education benefits and face legal, social, and economic challenges. These students are not eligible to be officially registered at any institutes or schools in Thailand. As a result, ALPPLA will benefit those most in need.
At the end of the program, students will achieve English proficiency education and improved necessary academic and English language skills applicable at University or a higher education level.
Marginalized youth with a great passion for education are eligible to apply. All must have a commitment to study, a strong hope for their future, and a passion for community service. No more than 25 students are accepted per module. There are three modules in an academic year.
Teaching Plan
These are classes in intermediate to advanced English language, basic Math & Science, and basic Social Studies (with an emphasis on Asia and particularly Myanmar). The ALPPLA will start with online learning before physically starting in-person classroom learning because of COVID-19.
ALPPLA is not a pre-GED course, but many of our ALPPLA students have gone on to study GED after a few months in ALPPLA.
Those students who study in ALPPLA usually fall into two categories: A) Those who want to pursue higher education through GED & University in the future and B) Those who want to increase their knowledge for work, travel, social relationships, etc. Either of these is a great reason for you to join us.
1. There are 3 courses – taught by 3 different teachers. You may study one, two, or all three of these courses.
