Over 44 young students participated in the BEAM x Skillseed Cultural Exchange Program between June 2nd and 6th, 2019, at BEAM Education Foundation. The theme for this program was ‘Education for Empowerment’. It had the objective to equip our students with skills and knowledge necessary to prepare for university applications, resumes, scholarship, and interviews. Participants improved their language skills, discovered their inner selves and personal assets, and improved public speaking skills all while discovering another culture. The exchange was organized by BEAM Education Foundation and Skillseed, a social organization from Singapore.
The participants explored through workshops run by the Hwa Chong (HC) students, how to present themselves professionally. The topics of the workshops included: 1) Asset-based mapping, 2) Interviewing and Storytelling, 3) Crafting a Resume, 4) Public Speaking, and 5) Storyboard Crafting. After the series of workshops, there was a “Mock Career Fair”, where the students had the chance to present their story boards to an audience. Through these workshops, BEAM students learned how to access their strengths and weaknesses, how to identify their goals and work towards them. The Hwa Chong students from Singapore also learned to appreciate the things they have taken for granted through discussions and interactions with BEAM students. Overall, participants learned personal development skills that will play vital roles in their futures.
Through this cultural exchange program, the BEAM community was enriched by the open and friendly exchanges with people from a different cultural background. Both, the BEAM and Skillseed teams, agreed to collaborate more often on these kinds of exchange activities that take place during school breaks and usually do not include strict academic component. The young participants discovered another culture, and improved self-awareness. This project provided BEAM students with the opportunity to practice their language skills and work together in an international community.
