On 20th July, 2017, BEAM Education Foundation, in collaboration with MAP Foundation, conducted a workshop on Consultation Training for Legal Employment in Thailand. During the first part of the training, BEAM’s Foundation Director Mr. Kyaw Kyaw Min Htut explained and reviewed migration in Thailand in detail. Following his speech, Lawyer Chang, from MAP Foundation, shared “Understanding the new Royal Decree” and recent laws issued for migrant labor from Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar.
In the afternoon, Khun Pim from MAP Foundation led a session on “Understanding the Necessary Documents and Processes of Work Permit Application” The facilitator divided participants into groups and had them brainstorm the issues of legal status for employment in Thailand The participants discussed the different ways they can legally work in Thailand. The discussion covered questions and answers on how to prepare to legally work in Thailand, how to apply and extend existing documents (such as pink cards, passports, Temporary Passport, Travel Document, Certificate of Identity, Non-Immigrant L-A, visas or work permits), and how to change employers.
Migrants from Myanmar are employed all over Thailand in many different types of work. Both men and women work in construction, agriculture, horticulture, animal husbandry, and the manufacturing and food processing industry. Women also work as domestic workers and caretakers in private households or cleaners in large institutions. In fisheries, men generally work on the fishing boats, while women sort and clean the fish.
Thank you to Lawer Chang and Khun Pim from MAP Foundation for providing and sharing a wonderful information session on recent laws and procedures on passport, temporary passport, pink card, work permit and visa process with BEAM members and students, migrant workers, and employers.
