On April 7, the Cultural and Resource Center held a lecture and discussion with CBOs on “Culture and Traditions of Thai and Burmese Water Festivals.” U Thein Win, facilitator, provided printed materials from Wikipedia about history and culture of both water festivals. The participants read and discussed in small groups before sharing their findings and having an open discussion on the differences and similarities between the two celebrations. Some participants shared their regional customs of the water festival. The talk ended with the facilitator delivering the astrologer’s predictions for the upcoming year, 1374 on the Burmese calendar and 2555 on the Thai calendar (during the Gregorian year of 2012).
