Have you ever felt like your dreams were too far away? That your village was too small, your chances too slim, and your future uncertain?
War War Lin, a 22-year-old from Kaw Dyut village in Ye Township, Myanmar, felt that way too. But her story is a powerful reminder that with the right support, perseverance, and courage to ask for help, dreams really can come true.
“I was hopeless in my village,” War War Lin says. “I asked my cousin how I could get out of this small place and continue my higher education.” Her cousin, a friend of BEAM teacher Ma Kay Thi Moe, introduced her to the GED Online program.
Through that introduction, War War Lin discovered the GED Online Program at BEAM Education Foundation. “I could study for my GED for free online,” she says. “It helped me not to burden my parents with the course fee. And as a BEAM student, I got connected to scholarship programs and free training, like how to use Excel.”
Before joining BEAM, War War Lin was passionate but directionless. She had just completed a two-year teaching internship, where she first noticed “the missing pieces” in her community. But she didn’t know how to take the next step toward her goals. “There was no one around me who could share the information I needed for my dream,” she says. “As a child from the countryside, I didn’t know how to get started.”
That changed with BEAM.
After completing her GED, War War Lin began applying for scholarships. It was not a smooth road. She applied for the Daughter Rising Scholarship—and was offered support only for living expenses, not tuition. So she was still locked out of a university education.
War War Lin looked into as many avenues as she could to try and fund her education. She never gave in and she never lost complete hope.
Then came the email.
“I jumped up from my seat without thinking,” War War Lin says. “It was the last-minute scholarship opportunity that allowed my dream to come alive this year.”
Now, she is proudly studying Social Science and Sustainable Development at Chiang Mai University thanks to Daughter’s Rising.
“A big lesson I learned from my story is that sometimes we have to try like we have nothing to lose,” she says. “After that, let fortune bring us where we belong—because sometimes what it means to be, will be.”
War War Lin is full of gratitude for the BEAM GED Online program. “BEAM is the gateway that changed my life from a countryside girl into an international student,” she says. “They helped me find scholarships, offered strong recommendation letters, and provided free training that prepared me for university life.”
Her transformation over the past year has been remarkable. “Last year, I was working at a nail salon in Chiang Mai,” she says. “Now, I’m an international student at CMU. As a girl who grew up in a small village, I am very grateful for the journey I’ve come this far.”
Her future is bright—and driven by purpose. After graduation, War War Lin plans to return to Mon National College as a teacher. “I’ll teach Social Science in English, but not just deliver lectures,” she says. “I’ll train my students to think critically, question social norms, and be part of the change for our society.”
She also has her eye on leadership. “My community needs young community leaders who can stand for our people,” she says. “I’m learning and practicing how to become that kind of spokesperson.”
Her advice to others about the scholarship process is powerful.
“Be honest with yourself. All of us are unique. Express your story like you’re promising something to your future self,” she says. “As long as you know exactly who you are, you’re undeniable—because the world doesn’t need another copy. The world needs the original you.”
And her advice for those considering BEAM?
“BEAM is not just a learning program—it’s a community you can rely on to improve your life,” War War Lin says. “It will never leave you until your dreams come true.”
