BEAM Education Foundation recently hosted 3 student interns from the International Alliance of Research Universities (IARU) Global Summer Scholar Program. This internship course was jointly offered by UC Berkeley and the University of Copenhagen in collaboration with RCSD, Chiang Mai University.

The internship period took place from 28 June to 13 July 2018.Themes addressed in the course include:

• Borders and boundaries
• Mobilities and immobilities
• Environment and natural resource management
• Human (in)security and social justice

Our interns had a chance to work with scholars, communities, and organizations addressing issues of local, regional, and global transformation to deepen their understanding of critical research approaches and processes.

Interns’ Reflections:

“My internship at BEAM was short but packed with meaning and learning. With only twelve days to work with BEAM, orientation was necessarily brief. While it was difficult to begin making meaningful contributions to on-going projects staff members were incredibly patient, striving to involve me in their projects. Student engagement was one of the highlights of the internship allowing me to engage in cultural exchange with the students in BEAM’s higher education program. The students were brimming with positivity and displayed a passion for knowledge the equal to which I have seldom seen. The meaningfulness of teaching as a pursuit is largely dependent on the disposition and outlook of those being taught. Teaching at BEAM was simply a joy. The staffs of BEAM embody professionalism and a strong desire to enact real change in the lives of marginalized members of society. Through asking questions and observing how they work as a team to deliver educational services, raise awareness the opportunity to apply for vocational training, and engage with members of the local community I came to a fuller understanding of what it means to work and volunteer in an nongovernment organization. I am thankful to BEAM for this opportunity to learn and grow.”

“My time at BEAM was truly invaluable and I’ve enjoyed every moment of my internship. From working with the NGO to engaging with the migrant students, I have learned so much about the struggles this organization and its students have to overcome. However, I have to say that my favorite moments here were with the students. They were all so energetic and motivated to succeed in life, despite the unfortunate conditions that they’ve had to face earlier in their lives.

One scene I want to draw to attention was the little singing circle after BEAM’s open house. As the students were preparing to leave, Vocational Program Coordinator Thaw Zin brought out his guitar and everyone crowded around to sing Burmese songs. Growing up in America, I never had the chance to make Burmese friends, so listening to the students sing and seeing their camaraderie was absolutely touching. I’m not sure if the students realize it just yet, but what they have with each other and with BEAM is special, and I am very thankful that I got to be a part of that – even if just for a moment.”

“It has been an amazing 12 days-journey to be an intern at BEAM. During the internship, we taught the students, shared our own stories of education and got to know the students. I have learned the most from getting to know the students and experiencing their joyfulness, courage, and eagerness to learn. Furthermore, I have also come to get to know how BEAM works as an organization and how they are working with various challenges. Being at BEAM has made me curious about how BEAM works in various ways to ensure, that the students can use education to achieve a sustainable future.”
