On 2nd November 2013, the BEAM Education Foundation went on an exposure trip to the Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden in Mae Rim, Chiang Mai. It is one of the most renowned botanic gardens in Thailand, and a major center for scientific research. Altogether, there were 80 participants from the first and second year bridging programs, as well as alumni from past programs, and students from the computer and Thai language programs.
The trip allowed bridging program students who are trying to enter university to gain subject knowledge based on projects assigned on plants and flowers, answer research-based questions on the field trip datasheet, improve relationships and participate in group work, and increase their enthusiasm for science. Students were also able to study humanity’s impact on the environment, global warming, and waste management at the garden’s Natural History Museum. After these activities, everyone relaxed with some fun games.
This field trip with a scientific objective gave students a great opportunity to take part in hands-on activities, while promoting cooperative learning and bringing out the “natural scientist” in them. These skills are essential in preparing students to explore the natural sciences. BEAM will make a small booklet of our trip to the Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden.
