When Im was fourteen years old she found herself way over the Myanmar border working in a Thai factory in Bangkok. Although Im worked very hard for her minimum wages, she had a dream to get an education. The only problem was there was no visible pathway to an education as her family could not afford to pay for school, let alone university fees.

Many years later, she found her way to the Beam CYLD program and has just made her dreams come true with high marks and an Institute of International Education (IIE) Scholarship. This is a four-year funded scholarship which not only covers tuition fees but also provides financial support for living expenses.

“I was not even an elementary graduate student before I joined the CYLD Program at BEAM. Who can believe that now, I am a GED graduate? Even though my life was hard, I did not abandon my hope, to be a graduate,” she says. “I am beginning a Bachelor’s degree at one of the top universities in Thailand.”  

This journey was not easy but Im has great advice for anyone that may be in the position she was in just over a year ago.

“Once you …. have a dream and decide to get there, focus on the present and future. Looking at your educational background and comparing yourself with others will be an obstacle to your ambition and goal,” she says. “BEAM is your parent where all teachers and staff welcome you and are always beside you to support and guide you through the journey.”

Im’s ambitious plan is to do a Bachelors of Mechanical Engineering at Chiang Mai University and then make a real difference where it is needed in the agriculture sector in Myanmar.

“Engineering is such a hard and thorough work and engineers protect our world, both living and non-living things, which makes me feel astonished that I will become one of these people.

My first step will be to enhance Myanmar farming situation as well as manufacturing. I want to see the development of industrialization of Myanmar so I will be a part of this,” she says.

There is no doubt in Im’s mind that BEAM was instrumental in helping her achieve her educational dreams. In fact, she has nothing but high praise for the CYLD (Community Youth Leader Development) program and the staff there.

“I am grateful for BEAM for standing for us who have dreams but don’t have any idea how to reach them. If I can express a word how I am grateful for BEAM, my teachers, and my friends, it would be more than ‘thank you so much’, but I don’t know what this word be,” she says.

Doing an American high school diploma is a large challenge for anyone, but each year many  BEAM students achieve their diploma and find scholarships. If you are considering looking at the BEAM CYLD program, Im has some good advice.

“If you are thinking about applying for CYLD Program, I would suggest to attend until the classes are finished. You might find many difficulties through this journey. But don’t give up. The GED diploma is not the only positive that you will obtain in the CYLD Program but also you will learn communication skills, leadership skills, and computer skills which will support your future study and your life,” she says.  “You will be ready to move forward for your Bachelor after you finished CYLD Program.”

When asked what the best thing about BEAM is, Im was quick to answer.

The best thing of BEAM is that your background does not matter, where you are from and who you are does not matter. BEAM supports every single student who are willing for an education,” she says.

“Personally, I felt safe in my education while I was in the CYLD Program. No matter what your problems are, staff and teachers listen to you and try to support you to get to your destination. We, BEAM students are surrounded by heart-warmed BEAM family.”

အသက်၁၄ နှစ်တုန်းက၊ Imသည် မြန်မာနယ်နိမိတ်ကိုဖြတ်၍ ထိုင်းစက်ရုံတစ်ခုမှာ အလုပ်လုပ်ကိုင်ခဲ့တယ်။ Im က ပိုက်ဆံအနည်းငယ်ရဖို့အတွက် အလုပ်အလွန်ကြိုးစားခဲ့ရသော်လည်း ပညာရေးအတွက် သူမ အိပ်မက်မက်ခဲ့ပါတယ်။ အရင်းမြစ်ပြသနာကတော့ ကျောင်းအတွက်တောင်မှ သူမ မိဘတွေက မတတ်နိုင်တဲ့အတွက် သူမ ပညာရေးလမ်းကြောင်း မရှိနိုင်တော့တာပါ၊ တက္ကသိုလ်အတွက်ဆို ပိုပြီး‌ မဖြစ်နိုင်တာပေါ့။

နှစ်တွေကြာပြီးသည့်နောက်၊ BEAM CYLD Program ကို သူမနည်းဟန်ဖြင့် ရှာတွေ့ခဲ့ပြီး၊ ရမှတ်ကောင်းကောင်းနှင့် နိုင်ငံတကာ ပညာရေးတက္ကသိုလ် (IIE) ပညာသင်ဆုဖြင့် သူမ အိပ်မက်တွေ အ‌ကောင်အထည်ဖော်လာနိုင်ရန် လုပ်ဆောင်နိုင်ခဲ့ပါတယ်။ ထိုလေးနှစ်တာ ပညာသင်ဆုသည် ကျောင်းလခသည်သာမက နေထိုင်စရိတ်ကိုလည်း ထောက်ပံ့ပေးပါတယ်။

“ကျွန်မ BEAM ၌ CYLD Program ကို မပါဝင်ခင်ကဆိုလျှင် အလယ်တန်းကျောင်းတောင် မအောင်ခဲ့ပါဘူး။ ကျွန်မ GED အောင်အောင် ဖြေနိုင်ခဲ့တာ အခု ဘယ်သူယုံနိုင်မလဲ။ ကျွန်မဘဝက ခက်ခဲခဲ့ပေမယ့်၊ ဘွဲ့ရတစ်ယောက်ဖြစ်ရမယ်ဆိုတဲ့ ကျွန်မရဲ့ မျှော်လင့်ချက်ကိုတော့ မစွန့်လွှတ်ခဲ့ပါဘူး” လို့ သူမက ပြောပါတယ်။ “ကျွန်မအခု ဘွဲ့ကြိုဒီဂရီကို ထိုင်းထိပ်တန်းတက္ကသိုလ်တစ်ခုမှာ စတင်တက်ရောက်တော့မှာပါ။ ”ဒီခရီးက မလွယ်ကူခဲ့ပါဘူး၊ ဒါပေမဲ့ Im မှာ မနှစ်တုန်းက သူမရှိခဲ့တဲ့နေရာမှာ ရောက်လာနိုင်မယ့် ဘယ်သူမဆိုအတွက် အကြံကောင်းတွေ ရှိပါတယ်။

“သင့်မှာ အိပ်မက်ရှိပြီး ထိုနေရာကို ရောက်ရမယ်လို့ ဆုံးဖြတ်ပြီးသည့်နောက်၊ အခုလက်ရှိ နှင့် အနာဂါတ်မှာ အာရုံစိုက်ပါ။ သင့်ရဲ့ ပညာရေးနောက်ခံကိုကြည့်ခြင်းနှင့် မိမိကိုယ်ကို အခြားသူတွေနဲ့ နှိုင်းယှဥ်ခြင်းသည် သင့်ရည်မှန်းချက်နှင့် ပန်းတိုင်အတွက် အတားအဆီးတစ်ခု ဖြစ်လိမ့်မယ်” လို့ သူမက ပြောပါတယ်။ “BEAM က သင့်မိဘပါဘဲ၊ ဆရာအားလုံးနဲ့ ဝန်ထမ်းတွေက သင့်ကို ကြိုဆိုကြပြီး သင့်ကို ခရီးစဥ်တလျှောက် ပံ့ပိုးရန်နှင့် လမ်းညွှန်ရန် သင့်အနားမှာ အမြဲရှိနေမှာပါ။”

Im ၏ ရည်မှန်းချက်ကြီးသော အစီအစဉ်မှာ ချင်းမိုင်တက္ကသိုလ်တွင် စက်ပိုင်းဆိုင်ရာ အင်ဂျင်နီယာဘွဲ့တစ်ခု ပြီးမြောက်ပြီးနောက် မြန်မာနိုင်ငံတွင် လယ်ယာစိုက်ပျိုးရေးကဏ္ဍအတွက် အမှန်တကယ်လိုအပ်နေသည့် ခြားနားချက်တစ်ခုကို ဖန်တီးရန်ဖြစ်သည်။

“အင်ဂျင်နီယာဆိုတာ အလုပ်တစ်လျှောက်လုံးမှာ ခက်ခဲပြီး အင်ဂျင်နီယာတွေက ကျွန်မတို့ရဲ့ (သက်ရှိ၊သက်မဲ့) ကမ္ဘာကို ကာကွယ်ပေးပါတယ်။ ထိုအရာက ကျွန်မသည်လည်း ဤလူများထဲမှ တစ်ယောက်ဖြစ်လာမည်ကို အံ့ဩသွားစေပါတယ်။ ကျွန်မရဲ့ ပထမခြေလှမ်းက မြန်မာ့လယ်ယာကဏ္ဍနဲ့ ကုန်ထုတ်လုပ်မှုကို မြှင့်တင်ဖို့ပါ။ မြန်မာနိုင်ငံရဲ့ စက်မှုဖွံ့ဖြိုး တိုးတက်ရေးကို မြင်ချင်သည့်အတွက် ကျွန်မပါဝင်ဆောင်ရွက်သွားမှာပါ” ဟု သူမက ဆိုသည်။

BEAM သည် သူမ၏ပညာရေးအောင်မြင်ရန် ကူညီပေးရာတွင် အရေးပါအရာရောက်ကြောင်း Im စိတ်ထဲမှာ သံသယဖြစ်စရာမရှိပါ။ တကယ်တော့၊ သူမမှာ ဘာမှမရှိပါဘူး၊ ဒါပေမဲ့ CYLD (ဒေသလူငယ်ခေါင်းဆောင် ဖွံ့ဖြိုးတိုးတက်ရေး) အစီအစဥ်နှင့် ထိုမှ ဝန်ထမ်းတွေကို သူမ ချီးမြှင့်ပါတယ်။

“အိပ်မက်တွေရှိပေမယ့် ဘယ်လိုရောက်အောင်သွားရမလဲ စိတ်ကူးမရှိသေးတဲ့ ကျွန်မတို့အတွက် ရပ်တည်ပေးခဲ့တဲ့ BEAM ကို ကျေးဇူးတင်ပါတယ်။ ကျွန်မ ဆရာတွေ နဲ့ သူငယ်ချင်းတွေကို ကျေးဇူးတင်ကြောင်း စကားလုံးတစ်လုံးလောက် ထုတ်ပြောနိုင်ရင် အဲဒါက ‘ကျေးဇူးအများကြီးတင်ပါတယ်’ ထက် ပိုပါတယ်၊ ဒါပေမယ့် ဒီစကားလုံးက ဘာလဲဆိုတာတော့ မသိဘူး” လို့ သူမပြောပါတယ်။

အမေရိကန် အထက်တန်းကျောင်း ဒီပလိုမာတက်ခြင်းသည် မည်သူမဆိုအတွက် ကြီးမားသော စိန်ခေါ်မှုတစ်ခုဖြစ်သော်လည်း နှစ်စဉ် များစွာသော BEAM ကျောင်းသားများသည် သူတို့၏ ဒီပလိုမာအောင်မြင်ပြီး ပညာသင်ဆုများကို ရှာဖွေတွေ့ရှိကြပါတယ်။  BEAM CYLD အစီအစဉ်ကို တက်ကြည့်ဖို့စဉ်းစားနေတယ်ဆိုရင် Imမှာ အကြံဉာဏ်ကောင်းတွေ ရှိတယ်။

“သင် CYLD ပရိုဂရမ်ကိုလျှောက်ထားရန်စဉ်းစားနေပါက၊ အတန်းပြီးဆုံးသည် အထိတက်ရောက်ရန်အကြံပြုလိုပါသည်။ ဒီခရီးမှာ အခက်အခဲများစွာ တွေ့နိုင်ပါတယ်။ ဒါပေမယ့် လက်မလျှော့ပါနဲ့။ CYLD ပရိုဂရမ်တွင် သင်ရရှိမှာက GED ဒီပလိုမာ တစ်ခုတည်း မဟုတ်ဘဲ၊ လူမှုဆက်ဆံရေးစွမ်းရည်၊ ခေါင်းဆောင်မှုစွမ်းရည်နှင့် ကွန်ပျူတာကျွမ်းကျင်မှုများပါ သင်ယူနိုင်ပြီး ထိုစွမ်းရည်တွေက သင်၏အနာဂတ်ပညာ‌ရေးနှင့် သင့်ဘဝအတွက် အထောက်အကူဖြစ်စေမယ်” လို့ သူမက ဆိုပါတယ်။ “သင် CYLD Program ပြီးသည့်နောက် သင်၏ဘွဲ့ကြိုအတွက် ရှေ့ဆက်သွားရန် အဆင်သင့်ဖြစ်ပါမည်။”

BEAM ရဲ့ အကောင်းဆုံးအရာက ဘာလဲလို့ မေးတဲ့အခါ Im က အမြန်ဖြေခဲ့တယ်။

“BEAM ၏အကောင်းဆုံးအရာမှာ သင့်နောက်ခံ၊ သင်ဘယ်ကလာသလဲ၊ သင်ဘယ်သူလဲဆိုတာ ကိစ္စမရှိပါဘူး။ BEAM သည် ပညာရေးကို လိုလားသော ကျောင်းသားတိုင်းကို ပံ့ပိုးပေးသည်” ဟု သူမက ဆိုသည်။

“ကိုယ်တိုင်အနေနဲ့ CYLD Program မှာရှိစဉ်မှာ ပညာရေးမှာ လုံခြုံတယ်လို့ ခံစားရတယ်။ မင်းရဲ့ပြဿနာက ဘာပဲဖြစ်နေနေ ဝန်ထမ်းတွေနဲ့ ဆရာတွေက မင်းရဲ့စကားကို နားထောင်ပြီး မင်းရဲ့ပန်းတိုင်ကို ရောက်အောင် ပံ့ပိုးပေးဖို့ ကြိုးစားနေကြတယ်။ ကျွန်မတို့ BEAMကျောင်းသားများကို စိတ်နှလုံးနွေးထွေးသော BEAM မိသားစုဖြင့် ဝန်းရံထားသည်။”
